The Midland Woodworkers Association is a local (Michigan) group devoted to the promotion and improvement of the art of working in wood. Members come from a wide range of skill levels and backgrounds, from the complete novice to the professional woodworker. MWA is a nonprofit organization, and has member dues of $20/year. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month (except July and August) at 7:00 PM in the Homer Township Hall. The meetings generally target a particular skill useful to woodworkers. Tools, jigs, displays, questions and hands-on practice are often a large part of the meetings. Both members and outside speakers and demonstrators take part. Some meetings concentrate on the use of particular skills and tools, while others focus on the comparison (with examples of performance) of a variety of manufacturers and models of tools. Tips, jigs, sharing techniques and sources for wood and tools are part of most meetings. Meetings are interactive, and guests are most welcome. MWA frequently sponsors exhibits of woodworkers' craftsmanship in the Midland area. Contributions from many different types of woodworking and compositions of different woods and materials are present. All items are returned to the owners at the end of the exhibit. Admission is usually free and the exhibits are open to the public. Each December meeting is held as a "Show-and-Tell" with members encouraged to bring in projects they have recently completed, and inform the audience of the techniques used and special features of the exhibits. Members are encouraged to bring their family and friends to the "Show-and-Tell" meetings. Every August the MWA sponsors a family picnic. Grilled chicken and pop are provided by the MWA and members are encouraged to bring a dish to pass as well as tables services for their family. Some MWA members bring toys for their children to make their time more enjoyable. Newsletters are periodically sent to members, although we have recently begun using this website and emails to keep members informed. Workshops are generally activities that are organized by a member or group of members who want to learn more about a particular technique. Sometimes the workshops are free to members; at other times a fee may be charged for the materials provided for the workshop. We have a library of books, magazines and video programs covering a wide variety of useful skills and projects. This library is available to members at each meeting. Items may be borrowed and returned at the following meeting. Visitors in 2007/08: |
